Why AGS?
I joined AGS because I wanted to be intellectually challenged, and exposed to abstract ideas and thinking. From the outside, AGS appeared to be a culturally immersive, abstract learning filled family. Upon entering high school, my premonitions were confirmed.
The program appealed to me because learning wasn't confined to simply a four-walled classroom, but rather the globe was the where the learning took place. I have enjoyed every year in AGS, because the students and teachers genuinely care about one another, and we don't learn straight out of the textbook. My high school experience has only been enhanced by being a part of this amazing program, as I broadened my horizons, and solidified my love for learning and traveling. AGS has helped me hone my problem-solving skills, cooperation and teamwork skills, and gain experience in project-base learning. I can't imagine my High School experience without being a part of AGS, because it has been such an integral part of me over the past four years. AGS has challenged me to the fullest, forcing me to observe the world around me and identify a problem, then formulate and execute a solution. Despite the long nights and intense projects, I can look back and feel proud of all that I have accomplished within AGS.
In addition, AGS has taught me to reflect on my actions, thoughts, and views on the world around me. With this being said, I have reflected the most on how much I have grown personally. I have grown in my confidence to do what I want, being the change I want to see, whether on a community or global level. Through working with so many different kinds of students, I have learned to be productive and appreciative in a diverse environment with a diverse set of tasks and opinions. And I have learned to be genuinely passionate about school and service work, because both tasks have a purpose and end goal that can teach you plenty. Thanks to understanding teachers and supportive students, I have been successful during my time in this program.
AGS's benefits will be far reaching, I can tell. From the first few months of our freshmen year, we are challenged to design food labels and advocate for endangered species. And from there, the work only gets more impressive. Because I have grown accustomed to working with different people and think "out-side-the-box", I already have an advantage over some of my future college classmates. I know what it takes to handle a large project, and break it up into feasible components. I know what it takes to reach out to professionals, conduct interviews, craft a presentation (and deliver it), and most of all enjoy doing it. My time in AGS has allowed me to become reflective, responsible, understanding, and impassioned- ready for what ever college throws at me.
